Coral

Facts About CORAL

Corals are living thing!

Although they may look like rocks or plants, coral are actually living animals. They form the unique ‘membrane’ of life which covers the rock like remains of their ancestors.

Corals are extremely sensitive to their surroundings

Coral can die from changes in temperature, water salinity and the introduction of pollutants.

Coral reefs and their vicinity supply over 50% of our seafood

Over 3000 marine species lives in our reefs. And from this breeding ground comes more than half our total seafood supply.

Coral reefs are source of many life saving discoveries

Medicine for the treatment of cancer and heart disease has already been discovered in bioactive compounds produced in coral reefs. Corals are also used as substitutes for the human bone in orthopaedic surgery.

The destruction of coral reefs continues

While most of the world’s reefs have suffered damage from abuse, we are fortunate that our reefs have remained relatively unspoilt. Let’s do our part to help preserve our natural marine heritage.
